Digital X-Rays

At Poquoson Veterinary Hospital, we use digital technology rather than film when we take X-rays. Digital technology allows us to adjust, magnify and improve our X-ray images so that we can see structures in better detail. Better quality X-rays help us better evaluate our patients. Digital technology is also safer for the environment and for our staff members.

Our staff is equipped to perform x-rays on any size pet, from a small parakeet to a large Great Dane. With digital technology, we are able to take and process quality radiographs quickly, allowing our veterinarians to observe problems that may not be visible with just a physical exam.

Our digital X-rays may be electronically transmitted to radiology specialists for review when needed. We also offer x-rays for submission to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) for breeders interested in this service.

Digital Imaging

Ultrasound

Our ultrasound equipment allows us to provide a higher level of care to our patients. Ultrasound is used to evaluate internal organs such as the liver, kidneys, bladder, intestines and spleen. Unlike X-rays, ultrasound allows us to see the internal structure of organs. Anesthesia is not needed for an exam. Biopsies of organs such as the liver may be taken using ultrasound rather than exploratory surgery.

Echocardiography

The cardiac ultrasound, also called an echocardiogram or an 'echo' gives us an inside look at the heart. We can watch blood flow within the heart and can see the heart valves opening and closing with every beat. When we perform an echo, we measure the thickness of the heart wall and the size of the heart chambers. The heart valves can be examined for normal motion and any thickened areas. Motion can be detected so that an assessment can be made of the ability of the heart to move blood.

Telemedicine

When needed, x-ray and ultrasound images are electronically transmitted to board certified specialists for their expert second opinions. It is usually possible for us to have your pet's case reviewed within 1 business day. Having a specialist available to review your pet's case helps us provide a high level of care when our patients are most in need.
